Lonestar Secrets tells the story of Shannon Astor, a single mom who desperately wants a new start for herself and her five-year-old daughter, Kylie. Shannon is a vet, and returning to the town where she gave birth to her daughter offers her a both a job and a home.  What she doesn’t count on are the memories with which she’ll have to deal, specifically the painful one that is evoked when she sees a little girl her daughter’s age who looks enough like her to be her twin.  It soon becomes clear to Shannon that the girl is Kylie’s twin.  Jack, the little girl’s father, is someone who hurt Shannon deeply in the past.  Has he hurt her again?  Or can she trust him as they work together to deal with the mystery of the twins’ separation and more?

I don’t feel bad that I’ve revealed the fact that Kylie and Faith are in fact twins because there’s so much more to this book than that.  When I was reading, I was sort of disappointed to find out they were sisters early on because I thought that would make the book predictable, but that was not the case.  There are other mysteries that must be solved in this book.  Shannon’s former roommate is missing, and the kidnappers think Shannon has something she doesn’t.  There’s also a mystery surrounding the death of Shannon’s parents.  Did they find the treasure that they sought?

In the midst of all the mystery,  there is Shannon’s story.   She carries a lot of hurt with her.  In order to overcome it, she has to learn to trust again, and she has to learn to trust the man she sees as having hurt her the most, not her daughters’ father but Jack, the man who has been raising the daughter taken from her at birth.  Over and over again, Shannon hears the message that love is a choice, and as the secrets surrounding her are revealed, one by one, she dares to risk herself enough to make that choice.  Watching her change throughout the book was, for me, what made it worth reading.
