Do You Have an Accent? What Kind?

I was born in New Jersey, raised by parents who were born in West Virginia, and lived most of my life in northwest Ohio.  That particular region of Ohio used to be pretty well known for being accent-less and training news broadcasters, but evidently, the people with whom I live have contributed to my speech.  Accent-less I am not.  No one ever commented until we moved to Indiana, which is still the Midwest in my mind.  Nevertheless, I wasn’t in the schools here very long before people came up to me and said, “Where are you from?  You certainly don’t talk like you’re from Indiana!”  And then there was the waiter in San Francisco who pegged the hubby and me as being from the Midwest right after we ordered our pop–not soda.

I found this quiz about accents over at Smiling Sally’s place and thought I’d give it a whirl.  I think it pegged my background pretty well.  If you take it, I’d love to hear your results.  Mine are below.

What American accent do you have?

Your Result: The Inland North

You may think you speak “Standard English straight out of the dictionary” but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like “Are you from Wisconsin?” or “Are you from Chicago?” Chances are you call carbonated drinks “pop.”

What do you know! We’ve got the same kind of accent. I came up with the Inland North too, which is no surprise. I was born and raised in Chicago. Fun little test.

I took this before and I think it said I was from the west. I don’t think I have an accent… of course, that is what we all say. My dad is an English professor and wouldn’t allow to pick one up in the many places we have lived! I have lived on both coasts, Hawaii, Guam, Indiana, Ohio, Texas, and Arizona. So who knows… but I don’t think I have one! 🙂
