How Big Is Wal-Mart?

I got this in e-mail, and although I could not find other documentation for its facts, I thought they were worth sharing. Wal-Mart IS awfully big! And I do most of my shopping there, groceries included.

1. At Wal-Mart, Americans spend $36,000,000 every hour of every day.

2. This works out to $20,928 profit every minute!

3. Wal-Mart will sell more from January 1 to St. Patrick’s Day (March 17th) than Target sells all year.

4. Wal-Mart is bigger than Home Depot + Kroger + Target + Sears + Costco + K-Mart combined.

5. Wal-Mart employs 1.6 million people and is the largest private employer.

6. Wal-Mart is the largest company in the history of the World.

7. Wal-Mart now sells more food than Kroger & Safeway combined, and keep in mind they did this in only 15 years.

8. During this same period, 31 Supermarket chains sought bankruptcy (including Winn-Dixie).

9. Wal-Mart now sells more food than any other store in the world.

10. Wal-Mart has approx 3,900 stores in the USA of which 1,906 are SuperCenters; this is 1,000 more than it had 5 years ago.

11. This year, 7.2 billion different purchasing experiences will occur at a Wal-Mart store.
(Earth’s population is approximately 6.5 billion).

12. 90% of Americans live within 15 miles of a Wal-Mart.

I wonder how much of this is really true. While I know Wal-Mart has great prices, I don’t shop there all that often, because I just don’t like the “crowdedness” of it, especially around the holidays. (I tend to be somewhat claustrophobic.) We have a Target Greatland that was built here a couple of years ago , which I shop at more than I do Wal-Mart.

I sure do understand about the claustrophobia, Carol. I have to pick my time. Our Wal-Mart was “remodeled” a couple of years ago, and the aisles got much narrower. Target around here is a pleasant shopping experience, too. Maybe Wal-Mart should take note.

Frightening. …and this is a company that advertises in Central America and Mexico for its part time employees with words like If you can get here we have a job for you. This is a company that employs many, many people to work too few hours to be eligible for their benefits programs…health care, etc. this is a company that undercuts local independent grocers, bookstores, furniture store, etc., etc. then leaves town when the profit margin is less than they hoped.

I don’t and won’t shop at Walmart or its counterpart, Sam’s Club.
